Hawaii (2023)

Nuclear tensions were high between the US and North Korea in January of 2018, so everyone was already on edge when a ballistic missile alert was issued by Hawaii’s Emergency Alert System over televisions, radios, and cell phones all over the state instructing citizens to seek shelter due to an incoming attack. The message concluded with “this is not a drill” however it actually was, and the message was sent accidentally. But for exactly 38 minutes and 13 seconds everyone in Hawaii thought they were doing to die. The real life event is the setting for this French film from writer/director Mélissa Drigeard, telling the story of a group of friends in Hawaii on that fateful day who use the time they assume are their last moments on Earth to unburden themselves. After the friends reveal their true feelings, the crisis ends and now they have to go back to vacationing knowing it’s too late to take things back. The Artist star Bérénice Bejo has a chatty make out scene where we see her protruding nips when she’s tossed on the bed, but it’s Émilie Caen who loses the most inhibitions. She lights up a cigarette and struts around the hotel showing all three Bs! As final images before you’re blown up by a North Korean missile go, that’s the absolute pinnacle!
